Re-Visioning cities through community and mentorship
Are you a BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour) youth in Metro Vancouver? Are you interested in shaping and reimagining our cities’ futures?
Urban ReVision: BIPOC Mentorship Studio is a 3-month long program for BIPOC youth, ages 18-30ish, who are passionate about shaping the future of their city. This program aims to build diversity in the urban planning profession and to build the capacity of BIPOC youth who may face higher barriers to accessing and influencing professional civic spaces across Metro Vancouver.
Overview
Following CityHive’s Knowledge-to-Action Framework, you will gain more insights about the experiences of being a BIPOC practitioner in city-shaping fields, through hands-on learning and mentorship from BIPOC practitioners in urban planning and civic governance. As well, you will have had the opportunity to put your critical thinking skills and creativity to practice through completing a project relevant to a local plan in collaboration with peers and partners.
What You’ll Do
Throughout the Urban ReVision program, you will participate in…
- Learning about the multi-faceted aspects of urban planning and civic governance, as well as careers in these fields;
- Mentorship with BIPOC professionals, where participants can explore city issues that matter to them and reflect on potential career pathways in the planning field;
- Project development and completion about local urban issues, in collaboration with peers and in partnership with urban planners. The project component intends to provide an opportunity for youth to put on their “planning hat”, to think critically of planning processes, and understand how local decisions are made through experiential learning.
Highlights
- Being part of an intentionally-created BIPOC space, where BIPOC experiences and perspectives are centred.
- Chance to learn more about urban planning and civic governance through hands-on learning.
- Personal and career mentorship with BIPOC professions in city-building professions.
- Developing project management skills and expanding networks through project completion in collaboration with peers and a community partner.
- Connecting with a tight-knit community of planning and civics enthusiasts.

Testimonials
❞
Collaborating with like-minded individuals from 18-30 years old in different stages of their life is a blessing. I genuinely could connect with many people’s hopes and aspirations for a better city. And despite our many similarities in our visions for the future, it’s so amazing to see how many different fields and backgrounds we come from. This cohort never failed to be an inclusive and kind space for people to grow and learn. I’m so proud of my peers – wherever they go off to next, I’m sure I’ll see them around.

This program has connected me to so many changemakers in a city that felt very vast and disconnected. I’ve been able to build strong friendships, and learn about different career potentials by the BEST mentors and facilitators.

I’m so glad I applied for this program. It was a fantastic opportunity to engage with like minded young BIPOC, make connections and really feel like being part of a community. I was able to learn so much in such a short time about planning, our civic systems and how I fit into them as a citizen. I highly recommend signing up for the program if you’re interested in learning about and improving our built environments and make some great friends along the way
