WHAT IF LEARNING ABOUT CITIES AND GOVERNMENT WAS FUN AND ACCESSIBLE?
OVERVIEW
In an ongoing effort to reach youth “where they’re at”, CityHive runs workshops and events that build the knowledge, skills, and agency of youth to engage with their cities. Whether it’s an urban planning walking tour or a hands-on Cities 101 workshop, CityHive believes that all youth deserve to engage meaningfully with local decision-making.

Past Workshops & Events
Youth Taking Charge
This web-based event marked the 1-year countdown to the 2022 municipal elections across BC. We brought together three young organizers (Jahmira Lovemore, Kathleen Zaragosa, and Jenny Tan 陳美希) who are changing the face of Metro Vancouver to speak about the changes they want to see in their cities and how they would like to see youth involved in local decision-making.
Housing & Affordability 101
Wondering what makes Metro Vancouver housing so expensive? Unclear about what terms like “zoning” and “redevelopment” really mean? In summer 2021 we brought together a panel of three experts – Sarah Ellis (City of Vancouver), Albert Huang (Terra Housing), and Leslie Shieh (Tomo Spaces) – to explore those questions and more as we unpacked the challenging dynamics of housing & affordability in Metro Vancouver.
Distant, Not Disengaged
When COVID-19 disrupted our daily lives, CityHive reached out to SFU Public Square and SFU’s Morris J Wosk Centre for Dialogue to develop an event series that would continue to explore some of the region’s most pressing challenges – and the Distant, Not Disengaged event series was born.
Election Night Watch Party
During the 2019 election, Millennials were the largest, and potentially most powerful voting bloc. CityHive, in partnership with Apathy is Boring hosted a Millennial Election Party to celebrate our democratic participation, meet other youth and watch the results of the 2019 election together. Throughout the event, youth engaged over what aspects of democracy worked for them, and causally networked with others interested in initiatives to better engage youth in political processes.
100 Debates for the Environment
100Debates for the Environment hosts 100 non-partisan all-candidate debates on the environment all across Canada. On October 3rd 2019, Global Shapers Vancouver, CityHive and the Climate Migrant and Refugee Project presented this free event in partnership with the 100 Debates on the Environment – Vancouver Granville initiative. The event focused on critical environmental issues including climate change, green infrastructure and ecosystem health in the Vancouver Granville riding.
Vancouver 101 / Meet (Y)our City
The Vancouver 101 / Meet (Y)our City event series were non-partisan, educational and social events ahead of the 2018 municipal elections to invite youth to learn more about the ins and outs of their cities, how decisions are made, and how to engage beyond voting. Each event was different, and included:
Party Like It’s Election Time
A birthday-themed-party to help folks across the civic engagement spectrum navigate voting in Vancouver’s election. We played an interactive quiz game to learn about what municipalities are responsible for, had voting packages available, and ate cake.
Urban Design Bike Tour
Led by former City planner Scott Hein, attendees learned about Vancouver’s history and major urban design decisions while biking through different neighbourhoods of the city.
City Council and Brews
We hosted a group at City Hall to watch a portion of a council meeting, and then hear more insider information with a discussion with the mayor’s Chief of Staff. For many, it was the first time they’d attended a council meeting. After, we made our way to Olympic Village for a sushi and kombucha social.
